A Breast Lift with Implants After Significant Weight Loss

Augmentation mastopexy, also known as a breast lift (mastopexy) with implants (augmentation), is a procedure used to rectify sagging breasts that have lost volume. The breast implants restore shape and fullness to the breasts while the lift tightens loose and stretched skin, giving the breasts a perkier and more youthful appearance.

A breast lift with implants is especially effective for cases where significant weight loss has resulted in smaller sagging breasts.

The Downside of Weight Loss

Regardless of whether weight has been lost due to diet and exercise or bariatric surgery, dramatic weight loss can have an impact on the size of one’s breasts. Weight loss due to bariatric surgery especially can cause significant flattening and sagging of the breasts, since a lot of fat is suddenly lost.

It’s an unfortunate fact that a significant loss of body volume leads to a significant loss of breast volume, which can be quite noticeable. Losing weight not only leads to a loss in breast volume but also loose skin – because our skin loses elasticity as we age, it loses the ability to shrink back down after weight loss.

The reason why augmentation is suggested along with a breast lift is because a lift alone would remove excess skin and elevate the breasts (by repositioning breast tissue) without restoring volume, so the flatness will remain. With the addition of implants, volume can be returned to the breasts to give them a natural and rejuvenated appearance.

Additionally, during this procedure, the nipple and areola can be reshaped and repositioned to be proportionate to the new dimensions of the breast.

Breast Lift and Augmentation Preparation

Your surgeon will review your medical history prior to the surgery so that any risks can be minimized. Before the procedure, be sure to mention any and all relevant information to your surgeon and follow all the instructions given.

Do not take any anti-inflammatory or blood-thinning medication such as aspirin in the days before the surgery, as they could cause excessive bleeding during the procedure. Smokers will need to stop smoking for at least a few weeks prior.

A breast lift with implants procedure usually takes approximately three to four hours to perform. When bariatric surgery is the cause of the excess skin and drooping, the surgeon may have to make longer incisions than those made during standard cosmetic breast lift. This is due to the large amounts of excess skin that will be removed.

After Your Surgery

After the surgery, a compression garment will be provided; this needs to be worn for around a month and a half. Downtime is usually about a few weeks, and any bending or heavy lifting should be avoided for at least a month. Swelling should subside in about six or seven weeks, and the breasts will settle into their final shape in a few months.
