Facelifts 101: What to Know Before You Come In

A facelift, also knows as a rhytidectomy, is a cosmetic procedure where Dr. Wagner works on restoring youthful contours to the patient’s face. Facelifts primarily address facial-aging issues such as sagging skin, jowls, and deep lines and creases.

These issues can be exacerbated by a wide variety of factors. Time and gravity are the main perpetrators, but other factors include sun damage, heredity, and damage from smoking. These can result in the face looking older and more worn out, making the person appear more tired or aged than they are.

How Does a Facelift Rejuvenate My Face?

A facelift is a great way to look ten years younger. The facelift mainly addressed the mid and lower half of the face. Dr. Wagner will remove excess skin from around the cheeks, neck, and jawline. Facelifts are also often combined with other surgical procedures such as a brow lift or eyelid surgery in order to reduce the costs of both operations as well as the recovery time.

Facelifts are also a great remedy for anyone who has developed creases in the skin of their face. The formation of these crease lines is an indication that the skin has begun to lose elasticity. The facelift can address this by removing the appearance of the lines and restoring a youthful look.

Why Are Facelifts One of the Most Popular Procedures?

The face is one of the first things people notice. It is also the most important part of the body when it comes to communicating and expressing thoughts and feelings. An older, duller, and more tired appearance can make people feel uncomfortable.

Facelifts have always been one of the most popular kinds of plastic surgery, as people want the most visible part of their body – the face – to be something they can be proud of.

Facelift Overview

The actual procedure is not very complicated. Dr. Wagner puts the patient under general anesthesia. He then makes a small incision either in front of the ear all the way to the hairline or behind the ear following the same course. After this, the skin is lifted.

The next part of the procedure depends entirely on what the patient wants. If the patient is suffering from loose and sagging skin, Dr. Wagner can tighten the skin to provide a rejuvenated appearance. Similarly, Dr. Wagner can also work on crease lines and jowls and can tighten tissues under the skin.

After the operation, Dr. Wagner redrapes the skin and closes the incision using either sutures or staples. The patient can go home the same day to rest and recover.

The results from the facelift will be visible within two to three weeks from the day of the operation. By this time, the recovery period from the facelift operation will be over and the patient can start to enjoy a more youthful appearance.

The results from a facelift last up to ten years. After that time, the patient may have to undergo another facelift to preserve their results.
