Gynecomastia (Male Breast Reduction)
Before & After Photos

Men with enlarged breasts or “man boobs”  due to gynecomastia or fat accumulation can restore the flat and masculine appearance of their breasts by undergoing male breast reduction. This surgical procedure is offered by Wagner and Associates Plastic Surgery Consultants of Indiana.

What Is Gynecomastia?

While men normally have a small amount of breast tissue, some men may experience the overdevelopment of the breasts causing a noticeable increase in size. This is the result of swollen excess glandular tissue and the accumulation of fat in the breasts. This condition, known as gynecomastia, affects an increasing number of men in Indianapolis, Indiana, and throughout the U.S.

What Causes Gynecomastia?

In adolescent and adult women, normal hormonal and genetic change influence the breast bud to develop as a part of secondary sexual characteristics. Similar changes also occur in men, but to a much lesser extent. Gynecomastia occurs when the male breast is either overstimulated or over-responds to hormonal or environmental influences.

The condition called adolescent gynecomastia appears in teenage years, and is usually physiological and harmless. Rare medical conditions, including endocrine abnormalities may cause gynecomastia in a minority of cases. A number of drugs and medications (marijuana, steroids, and a variety of other medications) can also predispose to excess male breast development. Sometimes, breast size is large enough to cause psychological distress or an impaired body image.

Male Breast Reduction Techniques

Male breast enlargement can be surgically corrected. Gynecomastia correction is usually considered a cosmetic surgery procedure. A variety of techniques are used, depending on the size of the breast, amount of skin present, and other factors.

Typical procedures involve incisions around the areola with excision of variable amounts breast tissue, often combined with suction lipection (liposuction) to contour the surrounding chest wall tissues. Power assisted liposuction and ultrasound assisted liposuction are commonly used. In more severe cases, removal of skin with a breast lift may be required. The procedure is usually performed on an outpatient basis.

Typical recovery is 2 to 3 weeks. A compression garment is often recommended during this time. Some patients may notice minor contour irregularities or sensory changes of the chest or nipple area. Most patients find the improvements in breast contour produce a more masculine chest contour and are less self-conscious about this aspect of their appearance.
