We’ve all heard the song “It’s Raining Men” and according to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons the nationwide number of cosmetic surgeries performed on men has continued to grow in recent years. On the surgical side, a 5% increase on both Liposuction and Gynecomastia occurred and on the non-surgical side, they saw another 5% increase with Botox® procedures and injectables fillers, like Juvederm®. When looking at stats from 2000, it shows of 355% spike in the number of men seeking Botox® and a 93% rise in injectables fillers. So, without a doubt..It’s Raining Men…hallelujah!
Our male patient base keeps growing too. Although the majority of our cosmetic procedures and surgeries are on women, men are a growing segment with increased demand so here’s a breakdown of our Top 7 most requested procedures:
Many believe liposuction is reserved for women but our office sees quite a few men who partake in this procedure. An important fact to remember is liposuction, is a contouring tool, not a weight loss technique. Best results are achieved on someone who has good muscle and skin tone to begin with and are near their ideal weight. Liposuction can be a reasonable procedure to improve their appearance. The abdominal area can be reshaped, as well as reducing the flanks, to provide a sleeker frame. It’s a safe surgery that is easily recovered from. Normally, patients can return to work in a few days. Final results take between six weeks and two months to observe the full effect of the reshaping.
2. Gynecomastia (Male Breast Reduction)
If you have excess fat and skin on the chest which can project into a feminizing effect of the male chest. This can also affect the size and shape of the nipple-areola region. Each case is assessed differently but many can achieve a very nice result with liposuction alone. Others more severe may benefit with an excision of any sub-areola area with or without areolar reduction to achieve a more masculine chest. This can be a very disturbing condition for a man of any age, particularly in the teenage years. Our typical patient for this procedure is either in their late teens or twenties or more mature men in their late forties and fifties. Many men are seeking help to restore their chest region to a more masculine look.
3. Botox® and Injectable Fillers
We call Botox® our ‘Miracle in a Bottle’ and injectable fillers, like Juvederm® should be the same but we’d have to call them ‘Miracle in a Syringe’. These two products are like liquid gold for the face and when both are customized on an individual it restores facial volume, relaxes and reduces wrinkles all while providing a noticeable degree of facial rejuvenation. Liquid facelifts often result in immediate gratification with little to no downtime.
4. Blepharoplasty: Eyelid Lift
Loose eyelids skin and the dreaded hooding also occurs in men. Women aren’t alone in how they show aging around their eyes. Loose hanging furrowed skin, lateral brows that hang over the upper eyelids. Bulging fat pads below the eyelids can also accentuate tear-troughs which brings forth the image of fatigue and loss of vitality, this could merit a lower eyelid lift. These conditions often result in friends and colleagues asking if you’re tired or if you’re had a late night. Fortunately, surgery can restore the upper eyelids to a more youthful appearance. The lower eyelids can be rejuvenated by removing excess fat and repositioning this tissue to eliminate the unwanted tear-troughs. Some men need upper or lower eyelid lifts while others can benefit from both the combination eyelid lift. These procedures can provide a refreshed and more youthful appearance.
5. Chin / Neck Lifts
Ideally, most men desire a strong chiseled jaw line and a defined chin. Hanging skin with or without fat excess can put forth the image of premature aging of a man beyond his chronological age. A chin and neck lift can be a valuable tool to restore your appearance and convey youthfulness and energy. The surgery is very predictable in the hands of a board-certified plastic surgeon and is an outpatient procedure with very little pain. Most people can be comfortable in social situation in about two weeks. Perfect for the men who feel they are having a turkey neck or are struggling with feeling comfortable in a dress shirt and tie.
Proportionality is everything. If you’re unhappy with the shape of your nose or how it blends with the rest of your face, then request a plastic surgeon to perform a facial analysis of you. If the nose seems big, maybe the lower face is out of place, such as a small lower jaw or chin. Nose surgery requires finesse and a keen understanding of the anatomy of the many sub-units of the nose. The key is to refine shape without feminizing the male nose. This is also a rather easy surgery to recover from and the patient can typically return to work within a week or two weeks. Many men are seeking help to restore their chest region to a more masculine look.
Some demand may be related to baby boomers who have taken good care of themselves and desire to look as good as they feel. Other men may feel it helps them have an advantage in the workplace or with a new career search. Men wish to look as good as they feel and are no longer shy about requesting procedures to help them achieve their desire.
