Your Breast Augmentation Consultation

Despite its popularity, many women considering breast augmentation are confused as to the comparative advantages of traditional saline-filled breast implants and silicone gel-filled implants. During your consultation, you will have the opportunity to learn more about the available types of breast implants, as well as to discuss your goals with Dr. Wagner.

Dr. Wagner will also discuss the various surgical techniques and make a recommendation based on his years of experience, anatomy, and cosmetic goals. Finally, Dr. Wagner will discuss in detail your breast enlargement, including where your breast surgery will be performed, incision size and locations, the position of your breast implants (either behind the breast tissue or beneath the chest muscle), as well as scarring, risks, and recovery. In most instances, results are immediate, although it may take several weeks or even months before swelling subsides.

Recovering from Breast Augmentation

Pain can be managed with medication. It can take some time for the swelling to subside, but patients should be able to resume work and most of their normal activities after two weeks or so. More strenuous activities will need to be avoided for four to six weeks. Our team will provide you with post-operative instructions and follow-up visits will be scheduled to ensure your recovery is going smoothly.

How much does a breast augmentation cost?
The average cost of breast augmentation is listed at around $6,500. on RealSelf.com but the price can vary widely. Many factors affect cost these include: geographic location, the method used, experience level of the surgeon, type of implant selected (gummy, shaped, and custom implants increase price), implant warranty, and additional costs associated with the surgery such as anesthesia and operating rooms fees. Cost should not be a determining factor when selecting a surgeon. Find a plastic surgeon with elite credentials who performs hundreds of breast augmentation surgeries a year. Verify the surgeon is a member of the American Society of Plastic Surgery (ASPS). Thoroughly look at the plastic surgeon’s website and their before and after photos to get a sense of who can deliver consistently good results. Most of our breast augmentation surgeries are below the national average.
Will insurance cover breast augmentation?
In most cases, breast augmentation is considered elective cosmetic surgery and not a medically necessary treatment. For this reason. Breast Augmentations are typically not covered by insurance unless it’s performed as part of breast reconstruction after breast cancer surgery and/or therapies. Dr. Wagner does not offer reconstructive breast surgery at this time. Discuss your options with your plastic surgeon. Wagner and Associates do accept Care Credit. Learn more about CareCredit and how you can apply at http://www.carecredit.com
How do I choose a surgeon?

As an elective procedure, the most important factor in choosing a plastic surgeon is experience. You need to look and see if they are a board-certified plastic surgeon who frequently performs the procedure with safe and effective results. Always check qualifications because many doctors are cosmetic surgeons or board-certified in fields other than plastic surgery. They do not have the same training as a plastic surgeon. Check with the American Board of Plastic Surgeons. To learn more: https://www.abplasticsurgery.org/

Where do you perform the surgery?
It is crucial to ask about the surgery center where your procedure will be performed. You need to know about the credentialing and who will be with you in the operating room. Check accreditation with the American Surgery Facilities (AAAASF) or another nationally recognized accreditation body. Look at the before and after photos of the surgeon’s work. A plastic surgeon with experience and expertise will have dozens of photos online for your review. Images should have the same lighting, stance, and similar distance from the cameras, cropping, etc.
How do I choose the right size for my breast augmentation?
Breast implants are measured in cubic centimeters (cc’s) The same size of the implant and the amount will look very different on each individual. It’s important to discuss expectations and desired results with your surgeon so he or she can help you decide what is right for you. We recommend you try on sizer test implants so you can see what a certain amount of volume looks like on your frame. We provide sports bras for this and you are also welcome to bring or wear your own. It’s helpful to have a couple of different tops so you can see what the implant sizers look like with a looser top versus a more fitted top.
What happens on the day of the procedure?
Breast augmentation procedures typically take 1-3 hours. Most first-time breast augmentation surgeries are one (1) hour of surgery. Some revision surgeries like a breast lift combined with implants can take 2-3 hours. We have our patients arrive at the Surgery Center one (1) hour before their scheduled surgery time. This allows them to get registered, get changed, meet their anesthesiologist, and also speak briefly with Dr. Wagner before going to the operating room. After surgery, Dr. Wagner will update your attending family member on the surgery and you will go directly to the recovery room. Once you are more alert you will be brought back to your post-operative room where your family member and/or a friend may join you.
What is expected for recovery?
Most breast augmentation surgeries go through somewhat predictable stages. Initially, the breasts will feel tight, swollen, and may be painful. Days 1-4 This is traditionally called the inflammatory period with swelling, pain, and discomfort. This is the time most use their pain medication. Most of our patients wean off their pain meds within a few days. Bruising may appear and fluid retention is common. Wear your post-surgical bra during this time until your first appointment with Dr. Wagner. He will then instruct you on any bra changes. You should be wearing a sports bra 23 hours a day. Push-up bras and underwire bras should be avoided during the first 6 weeks unless instructed by your surgeon to do so. Days 5-10 Delayed swelling may appear. Some patients may experience constipation due to pain medication. Most patient will see their surgeon within the first 5-10 days after surgery. At this time, he may want you to start breast implant massages. Do not begin these unless your surgeon has instructed you. You should be wearing a bra 23 hours a day and not sleeping on your stomach. Days 11-20 This is the most frequent time when your adhesive and steri-strips covering your incision are about ready to come off. They will loosen on the edges and be more like a band-aid ready to be removed. This time has a lower risk of infection and bleeding. You should be wearing a bra 23 hours a day and not sleeping on your stomach. Days 21-40 Progressive relaxation of scar tissue should occur. It is critical that you follow your surgeon’s post-op instructions and that you come to post-op appointments. Days 40-12 months Lightening, shrinking, and softening of the incision are most likely to occur at this time. Resolution of any residual swelling should subside by this time. Upper body exercise, upper body weight training, running, jogging, and jumping should all be avoided until your surgeon releases you to resume normal exercise which is 6 weeks after surgery for most. You should be wearing a bra 23 hours a day and not sleeping on your stomach until you are released to resume full unrestricted activity.
How often do breast implants need to be replaced?
A common misconception is that breast implants need to be replaced or lifted every few years. This idea keeps many women from getting the procedure they want because they are worried about long-term costs and future surgeries. Breast implants last longer than you may think which means there is no reason to plan on having a major surgery every few years for the rest of your life. You should be aware that you may have one or two follow-up surgeries in your lifetime. It’s not a given, but it is better to be prepared for the possibility than to be surprised when you experience a complication or dissatisfaction with your implants. When it comes to the “average lifespan” of implants, there are no guarantees. Some will last a lifetime, while others have complications within a few years. On average, the majority of implants last 10-20 years without complications. Recent FDA reports indicate that about 20% of women will have their breast implants repaired or replaced within 10 years of the original surgery. In most cases, breast implant results last a very long time. It is important to monitor the status of your implants regularly. Those with saline implants can check their status easily by looking in a mirror. The leakage of saline implants is immediate and more obvious. A ruptured implant will deflate and the saline would be absorbed by the body. Your breasts will continue to age over time due to pregnancy, weight fluctuations, hormonal factors, and/or aging. Loss of elasticity can affect how things look. The normal aging process affects all breasts even those with implants. Silicone implants have more of a ‘silent rupture’ which is not as obvious as a saline rupture. The silicone gel implants have a cohesive gel product so the implant stays intact and together in the event of a rapture. The FDA does recommend that patients occasionally check their silicone implants for a rupture with an MRI. The FDA guidelines are to check them after 3 years with an MRI and then every 2 years for as long as you have the implants. We always recommend that your receive regular mammogram testing and any other additional breast testing recommended by your primary care physician and your Ob/Gyn physician.
