Chemical peels effectively improve skin texture, tone, and overall appearance through controlled exfoliation of damaged skin layers, revealing smoother, more youthful-looking skin beneath. At Wagner and Associates Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery in Indianapolis, chemical peels are performed by our highly trained aesthetic professionals under the leadership of board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. Jeffrey Wagner.

What Are Chemical Peels?

A chemical peel is a non-surgical cosmetic procedure that uses specially formulated chemical solutions to address multiple skin imperfections, including:

  • Fine lines
  • Sun damage
  • Mild acne scars
  • Uneven pigmentation
  • Age spots
  • Mild surgery or injury scars
Woman with eyes closed, serene expression.

Chemical peels work by causing controlled damage to specific skin layers, prompting the body’s natural healing response and encouraging new cell growth. Depending on the severity of your symptoms, we can recommend different strength peels, generally categorized as superficial/light, medium, or deep.

Good Candidates for Chemical Peels

You may be a good candidate for a chemical peel if you want to improve your skin’s texture and tone, are in good overall health, and have realistic expectations. Many skin types can benefit; a careful evaluation with our cosmetic team will determine the ideal depth to support safe, effective results. Those with active infections, open lesions, uncontrolled skin conditions, or who cannot avoid sun exposure during healing may not be eligible.

What Happens During a Chemical Peel Session?

The chemical peel process begins with a thorough skin cleansing to remove oils and debris. Superficial peels typically require no anesthesia, while some medium peels may use topical numbing. Deep peels can involve oral medication or monitored sedation for comfort.

Next, we will carefully apply the selected chemical solution, ensuring even coverage and appropriate penetration depth. You may feel mild tingling or burning sensations, which are expected.

The chemical solution remains on the skin for a predetermined time based on the peel type and individual skin response. After the appropriate contact time, the solution is neutralized and removed, followed by the application of soothing post-treatment products.

After Your Chemical Peel

Recovery varies significantly depending on the peel depth and individual healing characteristics. Superficial peels typically require minimal downtime, with patients experiencing light flaking and mild redness for a few days. Medium peels involve more extensive exfoliation and may need one to two weeks for complete healing. Deep peels require the longest recovery period, often involving swelling and peeling for several weeks.

Regardless of the peel depth used, you must diligently follow our staff’s post-treatment instructions, including cleansing, moisturizing, and sun protection as directed. Be sure to avoid picking at the peeling skin!

I don’t even know where to begin. I have so many good things to say. I was nervous as heck about surgery, even though it was something I was choosing.. Dr. Wagner and his staff were incredibly comforting. The process was super smooth and surgery went great. I am much more confident with how I look now. Pain after surgery was minimal. After 3 days I stopped even taking just Ibuprofen. If I ever need or want plastic surgery again, I’m definitely coming back

Chemical Peel FAQs

When will I see results?

K
L

Initial results become visible as the peeling process finishes, typically within 3-7 days for superficial peels and 1-2 weeks for deeper treatments. However, the full benefits, including improved texture, tone, and collagen stimulation, should continue to develop over the following weeks to months.

When can I wear makeup again?

K
L

For light peels, mineral makeup can usually be applied the next day, while medium and deep peels require waiting until the initial peeling phase is complete. Using makeup too early can trap bacteria and interfere with the healing process; our team will guide you on how to wear makeup safely again after your chemical peel sessions.
