Why Consider Breast Revision Surgery?

There are many reasons patients choose breast revision, including:

  • Implant rupture or deflation
  • Capsular contracture (tight, hardened scar tissue around the implant)
  • Implant malposition, asymmetry, or migration
  • Dissatisfaction with the size, shape, or feel of current implants
  • Visible rippling or wrinkling
  • Double bubble deformity
  • Shifting of the breast crease (fold) or nipple position
  • Changes after pregnancy, breastfeeding, or significant weight fluctuation
  • Desire to remove implants entirely
  • Upgrading older implants

Am I a Good Candidate for Breast Revision Surgery?

You might be a good candidate for breast revision if you’ve had breast augmentation surgery in the past and now have concerns about comfort, appearance, symmetry, or implant condition. If you have an active infection or uncontrolled medical conditions, Dr. Wagner may recommend postponing surgery or taking steps to optimize your health first.

Your Breast Surgery Consultation

During your initial consultation, Dr. Wagner will review your surgical history, evaluate your implants and surrounding tissue, and talk through what you want to change. Depending on your situation, imaging with ultrasound or MRI could be recommended. You’ll also discuss incision approach, expected scarring, risks, and recovery so you can make informed decisions.

Common breast revision approaches discussed during consultation include:

Implant Removal (Explant Surgery)

Some patients want to simply remove their implants without replacement due to lifestyle changes, personal preference, or other concerns. Dr. Wagner will explain what to expect afterward and whether adding a breast lift can further improve shape and position after implant removal.

Implant Removal and Replacement (Implant Exchange)

Implant exchange removes the current implants and replaces them with new ones. This might be recommended because of rupture/deflation, capsular contracture, malposition, or a desire to change implant size, type, or profile.

Capsulectomy

A capsule (scar tissue layer) naturally forms around any implant. If it becomes thick or tight (capsular contracture), it can cause firmness, distortion, and discomfort. Capsulectomy removes part or all of the capsule to address the problem.

Pocket Revision

The implant “pocket” can stretch or shift over time, leading to implant displacement and asymmetry. Pocket revision reshapes or reinforces the pocket to improve implant position and overall balance — often to address issues like bottoming out, implants shifting to the side, or implants sitting too close together.

The Breast Revision Procedure: What to Expect

Breast revision surgery is typically performed under general anesthesia. The length of your procedure depends on what your revision involves; an implant exchange alone is often shorter than a revision that also includes capsule removal and pocket repair.

On the day of surgery, patients generally arrive about one hour before their scheduled operation time to check in, meet the anesthesiologist, and speak briefly with Dr. Wagner. After surgery, you’ll be monitored in recovery and then discharged with a trusted adult once you’re cleared to go home.

After Breast Revision Surgery

Because breast revision is highly individualized, recovery expectations and timelines will vary. Most patients should expect some swelling, bruising, and soreness early on, with a return to many normal daily activities and desk work in about 1–2 weeks. More strenuous exercise is often reintroduced gradually around 4–6 weeks, depending on how you’re healing and Dr. Wagner’s guidance. You’ll receive detailed post-op instructions, and follow-up visits will be scheduled to monitor your progress.

  • Improves symmetry, position, and overall breast shape
  • Updates implant profile, size, and/or type to better match your goals
  • Can restore comfort when scar tissue is causing tightness or pain
  • Helps align your results with your current lifestyle

FAQs

Do implants need to be replaced every few years?

No fixed replacement schedule exists if your implants are doing well, but they are not lifetime devices. Some patients will need additional surgery in the future due to changes or complications.

Can I change my implant size during revision?

Yes. Many revision patients choose to upsize, downsize, or change implant style or type as part of their plan, depending on anatomy and tissue support.

Is breast revision covered by insurance?

Most revisions are considered cosmetic, but partial coverage may be possible in some cases involving medical complications depending on your policy.
